Dec. 17 Winter Storm: Snow, Ice, and Rain

A complex system of snow, ice, and eventually a soaking rain will impact Western Pennsylvania on Saturday. After a dangerous morning commute, the messy winter precipitation will give way to rain by 10:00 am and wash away any snow accumulation. This is expected to be a minor snow event, with most of the agencies we track predicting no more than an inch of the white stuff. Ice accumulations will be extremely specific to your exact location, as numerous factors such as air temperature, ground temperature, and existing accumulation all play a role. Since the rain will wash away all of this snowfall in the afternoon, it will not require any shoveling or be a real nuisance, but it is still an accumulation worth tracking. Our analysis will rely on the official snow measurement reported by the National Weather Service.

Below are the snow accumulation forecasts for tonight through tomorrow morning:

KDKA anticipates little to no accumulation in Pittsburgh, with the majority of precipitation falling as a wintry mix.
